Aging is a natural process that cannot be stopped, but the way and manner in which we age can be controlled by each individual and the lifestyle they live. Healthy aging is very advantageous and would make aging more stress and disease-free.

Below are some steps to help you grow old in a healthy way:

Stay active

Maintain or start an active, healthy lifestyle. Make physical movement a part of your everyday life. Regular exercises which include: walking, stretching, gardening, taking the stairs can be done. According to Medline Plus, exercising regularly can improve your balance, help keep you mobile, improve your mood by reducing feelings of anxiety and depression and contribute to better cognitive functioning.

Maintain a healthy, balanced diet

Eat meals that contain the six classes of food in the right proportion. Also, increase the intake of fruits and vegetables while decreasing sodium and serving sizes as well as adhere to diet regimen by nutritionist or doctor.

Rest and sleep

The body must rest to rejuvenate. Developing a schedule or bedtime routine to regularly get 7-9 hours of sleep per day is critical to growing old in a successful and healthy way.

Practice prevention

Ensure the house is a safe environment free of tripping hazards to avoid falls which are detrimental to healthy aging. It is also important not to neglect annual health screenings, to take note of all health changes, and to take prompt action before it any issue escalates. As they say, prevention is better than cure.

Reduce stress

Growing old and its accompanying changes can cause stress which may lead to anxiety and depression. Focusing on identifying your stress triggers and finding healthy ways to manage stress such as journaling, exercise, sleeping, and so on helps to mitigate stress which is very important to maintain healthy aging.

Be socially active

Try as much as possible to follow your doctor’s prescription whether for drugs, diet, or exercise. Also, ensure that you never start taking a drug or stop taking a drug without first consulting your doctor.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle

This involves limiting smoking, alcohol consumption, unhealthy diet, and focusing on a healthy diet, exercise, rest, hydration. A healthy lifestyle promotes healthy aging.

Embrace growing old

Growing old is something no one can avoid or run from. Embrace the process of aging and see it as natural. Embrace a positive mindset towards it and focus on what you can do instead of any limitation you may have.
